Printer configuration - EPSON TM-T82IV

Notes
Note: setting up your printer for the first time is an advanced topic and should be performed by your IT administrator or vendor.

This article describes the process of configuring an EPSON TM-T82IV thermal printer with an accompanying Wi-Fi dongle to be used for docket printing with Embrayse. You can also refer to the official Technical Reference Guide for further details. Once the printer has been configured, any device that is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the printer and has the appropriate SSL certificate installed (see steps 15 and 16) will be able to print.
  1. If the printer is new, you can skip this step. If the printer has previously been configured and is not in a working state, perform a factory reset. To do this, first turn off the printer and ensure the roll paper cover is closed. Then hold down the status sheet button while turning on the printer. Keep holding the button until a message is printed, which provides you with menu options to reset saved settings.

  2. Ensure that the Wi-Fi dongle is connected to the printer, and the printer is turned on. You should see a printout which indicates that the device is in "SimpleAP" mode.

  3. You will see a new Wi-Fi network available with a name like DIRECT-TM-T82IV-XE45000000 (the serial number will be different for your device). Connect to it, noting that this will disconnect you from any existing Wi-Fi connection and you will temporarily lose internet connectivity. Upon connecting, the printer will print an IP address which is typically 172.16.10.1.

  4. Open your browser (Chrome shown here) and navigate to the IP address from the previous step (usually https://172.16.10.1). When prompted with a certificate related security error, click Proceed:

  5. Go to the Wi-Fi settings:
  6. When prompted for password, use the serial number on the side of the device (e.g. XE XE45002131)
  7. Select your main Wi-Fi from the list and press OK, then enter the Wi-Fi password:

Wait until the printer prints some information including a new IP address. Your printer is now connected to your Wi-Fi router and your devices can communicate with it without connecting directly to the printer.

  8. Connect your computer to your own Wi-Fi again.

  9. In the browser navigate to the new IP address that was printed for you. Repeat step 4 when you see a certificate error.

  10. Navigate to Advanced Settings.

  11. Recommended: On the Status page, make note of the MAC address. You can use this to reserve the printer IP address in your network router, to prevent it from changing in the future:
  12. Click the Administrator Login button in the top right hand corner and use your device serial number to log in:

  13. Go to Network Security > Certificate > Self-Signed and click Update:

  14. Set Common Name to be just the IP address of the printer and leave the validity as 10 years. Click Next and then OK. The device will restart after some time.

Make sure to refresh the page after the device has restarted.

  15. Export the site certificate. You can do this by viewing the certificate from the browser address bar, and using the Export option or Copy to File… wizard to export the file. Depending on your computer (Mac or Windows) the export process is slightly different and the file may have a .cer or .pem extension:

  16. The certificate you exported must be installed as a Trusted Root Certificate on any device that requires to print. Typically, these would be the tablets used for Embrayse. If you install the file on an iPad, you need to trust it using these steps. You can also use mobile device management software (MDM) such as InTune to do this.

  17. You are now ready to set up the printer in Embrayse. Browse to the Embrayse application as an admin user and go to Settings > Printers and click Add Printer to set up your printer:

    Use the following settings:
    1. Name: This can be any name that makes sense for you.
    2. Device ID: Leave this as local_printer.
    3. IP Address: Use the IP address of the printer.
    4. Port: Leave this as 8043.
    5. Top Margin and Bottom Margin: This determines how much blank space is inserted at the top and bottom of dockets.
    6. Print resident notes on dockets: This is checked by default. If there are sensitive notes about residents which you don't want printed, untick this. The resident allergies, IDDSI levels, diets, and tags will still be printed.
